This book covers a very broad spectrum of material, covering complicated and nuanced topics and concepts, and does so in a very readable and easy to grasp manner. Critical theory is pretty heady stuff, and it will invite you think in new ways, but with this book you are less likely to be lost and frustrated. This is the best single introduction that I have read, and beyond that, it is just a really good read. I learned new things, and was also able to cement concepts I had been introduced to previously but perhaps without the same breadth. This is really an astonishing work; students should be happy.
Ordered this book for a class and found it to contain lively prose, with clear introductions to the methods of thinking. It doesn't replace the source material it summarizes, nor does it intend to, but as a reference to the major schools of thought is serves well. 'It ended up on my bookshelf in the office beside several reference books on writing and now, a year after the class has ended, I find myself returning to it to un-obfuscate concepts I come across in critical theory. You could, while reading Althusser, return to his source texts by Marx (which it's unclear if he read) or come to this book to refresh your understanding of Marxist theory and then the Structuralist thought he incorporates in a few pages.It's not an absolute must in a digital age, but the writing is clearer and more succinct than a wikipedia article, the organization is well thought out and indexed, the paragraphs relatively brief and as comprehensive as you can expect. There is a fair amount of summary to keep things in context and diglossia to keep it in English. Examples are ample and useful.It's a book I kept after the class and will return to while in school.
Helpful book for those trying to learn about Literary Theory for the first time. We used it in my Literary Theory and Criticism graduate-level English course.
Great introduction on various critical theories. I liked the author's casual, conversational tone. It made everything easier to take in. I think he did a great job explaining every theory and this is one textbook I'm going to actually hold on to for future references.
Parker gives an understandable overview of the main camps of literary theory; however, his own bias shines through, he can be tedious, and he could do a better job of showing the practical application of theory. Students can be left wondering what to do with the terms they've just digested. Though Parker does a decent job, I favor Lois Tyson's Critical Theory Today for a more accessible and practical introduction to theory, especially for young students.
If you need or want to understand the major approaches to interpreting literature, including the practical application of that theory to a sample text, then this is your very readable resource. Very highly recommended.
Funny and informative! The author uses relatable analogies to explain some denser theories, and delves into really interesting symbolism and tropes.
I really enjoy the writing style of this author. Many academic books come across as very boring and hard to read, but this one is interesting and written with a little humor.
