I intended to buy a book on modern railway signaling and switching. This ain't it. If you want to see some excellent pictures and learn about the history of railroad signaling this might be good for you. I didn't read it. A quick glance looking for the answers to my questions led me to realize this wasn't for me.
After having traveled by train and been at the train station to pickup guests in the period of time from 2008 until 2011, I found this book to be very informative. Suddenly, I was able to tell just how far away a train was by looking at the signals on the side of the tracks. I also write articles for my website blog on old farm tractors and farm machinery. I often include in the articles a short description of how the particular tractor or farm machine made its way from the factory to the dealership by train. Information about railroad signaling gained from this book also a great deal of interesting detail to the articles.
Excellent resource for learning different types of railroad signals. We used it as a reference when preparing a signals class for a Boy Scout rairoad merit badge program. I plan to donate it to the library of our railroad club.
I have read other books on railroad signalling that have always been equally well thought out and presented. However, they were almost exclusively focused on the British Isles. This is the first book that I have come across that not only sheds light on the long forgotten world of mechanical signalling in the United States; but also makes technological comparisons between Great Britain's signalling progress as compared to the United State's. It also includes diagrams, thorough explanations to signalling practice and excellent pictures on the infrastructure behind the signals. This book is a must have for realistic railroad modelers and railroad historians anywhere on the North American continent and beyond.
Same kind of information you would read on a Wikipedia page. No real technical information on what makes signaling systems operate. If you want a basic understand of railroad signal history with pretty pictures then here is your book. It's basically a pretty Wikipedia page in paperback.
This is little more than a photography book. There is little technical content, and some of the diagrams have horrendous errors. You will never learn how a dispatcher knows a block is entered from the north or south, or the dilmenas faced by engineers and dispatchers when cab signaling fails, and why someone would design an electrical relay that is kept spinning like a top. Got a Sprint phone? The connection to Southern Pacific Railroad isn't even mentioned.
Nice historical text, but thin on real details of signaling fundamentals. For a RR historian this is an essential library addition, but for the real meat and detail of signaling, other books are better choices
I enjoy this subject though this book seems as if the chapters have been mixed up at times. Early on he mentions some things (like home and distant signals) without describing what they are until later in the book. There are a handful of problems like that in the book. Better organization would be nice.Still I found it very entertaining and informative. The layout and pictures are really nice. This is something you just have to read on paper as opposed to downloading it. (And I do have a Kindle).
